The New Zealand men's number one tennis player Rubin Statham has followed his fellow Kiwi wildcard Dan King-Turner out of the Heineken Open in Auckland.

Statham, who's ranked 414th in the world, lost in straight sets to Robby Ginepri, who is ranked 49th.

Ginepri won the first set 6-2 but Statham picked up his game in the second and broke the American's serve to go ahead 3-2 - only to then drop his own serve.

He recovered from 0-40 before missing a couple of chances to break back.

King-Turner lost in straight sets to the American sixth seed Sam Querrey.

Meanwhile, last year's runner-up Juan Carlos Ferrero went through to the second round when an arm injury forced his Japanese opponent Kei Nishikori to withdraw.

The former world number one Ferrero was leading 5-3 in the first set.
