The New Zealand tennis number one Marina Erakovic is through to the second round at the Australian open in Melbourne.

She's beaten Petra Cetkovska 6-4 7-5 and will now play another Czech, Lucie Safarova in the

second round.

Meanwhile Roger Federer took his first step towards a record-equalling 14th grand slam title with a 6-1 7-6 7-5 victory over Italy's Andreas Seppi.

Serbia's big three --Jelena Jankovic Ana Ivanovic and Novak Djokovic flew through early and so did the American Andy Roddick and Russia's former champion Marat Safin.

Others to progress include the Heineken Open champion Juan Martin Del Potro and another Argentinian David Nalbandian, Spain's David Ferrer and other semi-finalist in Auckland Robin Soderling of Sweden.

And the former Heineken Open champion Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany ousted Saturday's defeated finalist Sam Querrey.

The women's third seed Dinara Safina and fellow Russians Vera Zvonareva and Anna Chakvetadze and Denmark's Caroline Wozniacki are through, too.
