Erakovic loses hard fought second round match at Australian Tennis Open

New Zealand's Marina Erakovic has lost her second round match at the Australian Tennis Open in Melbourne, going down in three sets to the Czech Republic's Lucie Safarova.

After losing the first set 1-6, Erakovic bounced back to take the second 6-3.

The third set was a bitter struggle lasting 16 games with Erakovic eventually losing it 7-9.

In other matches former world number one Roger Federer, who's chasing a record equalling 14th grand slam title, eased into the third with a straight sets win over Evgeny Korolev of Russian.

Defending champion and third seed Novak Djokovic of Serbia also advanced while in the women's draw world number three Dinara Safina's recovered from a shaky start to win her second round match as did Serbian fifth seed Ana Ivanovic.
