The former Australian cricketer Darren Lehmann has called for allrounder Andrew Symonds' return to the Australian one-day side as soon as possible.

The 33-year-old Symonds, who's recovering from knee surgery, only began running again last week but has returned to Queensland training and could could be back in the Bulls side next week.

Australian captain Ricky Ponting has heaped praise on the youngsters who have stepped up in the absence of the likes of Symonds.

But Lehmann believes the Australian team has missed Symonds experience and explosive power, particularly in the one-day format.
