Turner says new caps ready to tackle Australia

The head of the New Zealand cricket selection panel says the State Shield form of 18-year-old Northern Districts bowler Trent Boult couldn't be ignored.

Boult and Central Districts all-rounder Brendon Diamanti are the new caps in the 14-man squad named by Glenn Turner's panel to play next month's Chappell-Hadlee One day series against Australia.

Turner says initially they contemplated introducing Boult to the top level in the longer version of the game but he and Diamanti have to be given their chance, otherwise their development will become stalled for six months.

And Turner says there's no reason why young talent such as Boult shouldn't be thrust into the cauldron of one-day action in Australia.

He says New Zealand should follow the lead of India and Pakistan who have for long time thrown young players in the deep end.

Batsman Peter Fulton returns to the side, as does bowler Iain O'Brien.

Daniel Flynn and Mark Gillespie have been dropped, while Jacob Oram wasn't considered because of injury.
