The New South Wales Waratahs have beaten the Queensland Reds 17-5 in Toowoomba in the two Super 14 sides' opening trial match of the year.
The Waratahs locked up the game with three tries before thunderstorms that had threatened all night on Saturday finally arrived to drench the enthusiastic Toowoomba crowd of 3,530.
Both sides showed they will look to attack under the ELVs in 2009.
