In the biggest shock so far at the Australian Open the top women's seed has been knocked out in the fourth round.

The Frenchwoman Marion Bartoli beat the Serbian world number one Jelena Jankovic 6-1 6-4 in Melbourne to advance to the last eight of the first tennis grand slam tournament of the year.

The 16th seeded Bartoli now faces a Russian, either Vera Zvonareva or Nadia Petrova, in the quarter-finals.

Another Russian, Dinara Safina, has saved two match points to come back against another Frenchwoman, Alize Cornet, winning 6-2 2-6 7-5.

Safina now plays either Jelena Dokic, the only Australian left in the singles, or yet another Russian, the 29th seed Alisa Kleybanova.
