ben Campbell best NZ golfer in NSW

Masterton's Ben Campbell finished the best of the New Zealand golfers in a share of 11th place in the prestigious Lake Macquarie Amateur in New South Wales.

Campbell, who won the Aaron Baddeley Junior International last month, shot an even-par 72 to finish on three-under par 285 at the coastal Belmont Golf Club near Newcastle.

Australian representative Scott Arnold fired a final round five-under 67 to win the Lake Macquarie Amateur on 15-under 273. He finished three shots clear of fellow Australian Brendan Smith.

Auckland's Ryan Fox was the next best placed kiwi in a share of 28th place on one-over after a final round three-under 69 while Peter Spearman-Burn (Wellington), Sean Riordan (Takaka) and Nick Gillespie (Hastings) were tied on 35th place on two-over 290. Daniel Pearce (Hastings) was 59th on seven-over.

Many leading players have won the Lake Macquarie Amateur with New Zealand's Danny Lee the 2008 champion and other winners including Geoff Ogilvy, Peter O'Malley and Nick Dougherty.
