Younis Khan takes over Pakistan cricket captaincy

Younis Khan has replaced Shoaib Malik as Pakistan cricket in the wake of the team's heaviest one-day international defeat.

Malik was appointed captain for an indefinite period earlier this month, but the Pakistan Cricket Board has been under pressure since Sri Lanka inflicted Pakistan's heaviest ever limited-overs defeat - by 234 runs - to win the series 2-1 in Lahore last weekend.

Khan's first assignment will be the two-Test home series against Sri Lanka next month.

Khan had earlier turned down an offer to captain the side after Pakistan's humiliating first-round exit from the 2007 World Cup in the West Indies.

Malik was then made captain until last December after which his contract was extended for an indefinite period.
