Butcher takes over at Inverness

9:51 am on 28 January 2009

The former England football captain Terry Butcher has been appointed manager of the Scottish Premiership side Inverness Caledonian Thistle and will continue as assistant coach of the Scotland team.

Butcher replaces Craig Brewster, who was fired a week ago following a run of seven straight Scottish Premier League losses.

Inverness is two points adrift at the bottom of the standings.

It is Butcher's first managerial job since leaving Brentford in 2007.

The 50-year-old Butcher, who will be assisted by former Scotland defender Maurice Malpas, has been working with George Burley in the Scotland setup for almost a year.
