Rugby record wiped off the record books

9:51 am on 28 January 2009

The worst defeat in English league rugby -- Coventry Saracens' 194-3 thrashing by Alcester -- has been declared void because Coventry's eight-man team put only three forwards into the scrums.

Though Coventry put in a full front row for the scrums, when Alcester cut their scrum to five, the laws of the game require a minimum of five forwards in scrums at all times.

The Rugby Football Union (RFU) says match points will be awarded to Alcester but the points tally will be scrubbed from the records.

lcester ran in 32 tries in the Midlands West Six match last Saturday to surpass the previous highest score in a game in England, 177-3 set by Norwich in a Norfolk Cup match against Eccles & Attleborough 13 years ago.

The tally fell well short of the world record score of 350-0 set by French third division side Lavardac against Vergt in 1984 when the losers refused to tackle in protest at having players suspended.
