Symonds says sorry to McCullum

9:15 am on 30 January 2009

The Australian cricket all rounder Andrew Symonds has been fined $4,000 over his comments on radio about New Zealand star Brendon McCullum last week.

Symonds pleaded guilty at a code of conduct hearing in Melbourne to a charge of making a detrimental public comment under the Australian players' code of conduct.

The Queenslander made the remark in an interview last week when critical of McCullum's selection for NSW in the Twenty20 final against Victoria.

The wayward Symonds apologised in a phone call to McCullum midweek and the Black Caps wicketkeeper says he took no offence from the comments and is in favour of Symonds' return to international cricket.

Cricket Australia's Board will meet on Tuesday to consider what further action they might take against Symonds who returns from injury to his Queensland side today.
