Phelps apologises over drug use

The record-breaking Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps has apologised after a British newspaper published a photograph allegedly showing him smoking marijuana.

Phelps, who won eight gold medals at the Beijing Olympics, says he engaged in behavior which was regrettable and demonstrated bad judgment.

He says he's 23-years-old, and despite the successes he's had in the pool, he acted in a youthful and inappropriate way, not in a manner that people have come to expect from him.

Phelps is promising his fans and the public it will not happen again.
