The world tennis number one Rafael Nadal has won his first Australian Open tennis tournament, and in doing so becomes the first player since Andre Agassi to win grand slam titles on three surfaces - grass, clay and hardcourt.
The four hours, 20 minute final looked to be going Federer's way after he fought his way back into the match to force a fifth set.
But Nadal, who survived a five setter in his semifinal, prevailed.
After the game Federer was clearly shattered, when he broke down in tears as he collected his runner up trophy.
