Joel Thompson goes to court

5:59 am on 4 February 2009

The Canberra second rower Joel Thompson is facing the axe from the National Rugby League club after he was arrested by police for allegedly assaulting his girlfriend, Danielle O'Brien, late last month.

Raiders chief executive officer Don Furner stood Thompson down yesterday after the former junior Kangaroo faced court on a charge of assault.

Thompson is the latest in a growing line of Raiders players to face punishment for off-field indiscretions.

Last year the club sacked star halfback Todd Carney following a series of incidents.

The saga caps a horror 24-hour run for the NRL which has seen five players, including Thompson, either facing police action or disciplinary measures from their clubs.
