Swimming chiefs solidly in behind Phelps

The World Swimming Federation has glowingly supported the Olympic great Michael Phelps despite his recent admission of inapproriate behaviour at a university party in South Carolina last November.

The News of the World's publication of a photo last weekend allegedly showing the multiple Olympic gold medallist inhaling from a glass pipe has done little to bend FINA's enthusiasm for him as a role model, and the Federation has issued a statement reiterating its confidence and admiration for a young champion who publicly apologised for his act.

At least two sponsors, Speedo and Omega, have said they don't plan to part ways with the 23-year-old Olympic hero.

But a South Carolina sheriff has said he will charge Phelps if he can prove the US Olympian smoked marijuana in his county.
