Aussies stay alive in Chappell-Hadlee series

6:10 am on 9 February 2009

The Australian cricketers have kept alive the Chappell Hadlee one day series after surviving an almighty scare from the Black Caps in last night's third game in Sydney.

Century maker Grant Elliott and wounded wicketkeeper Brendon McCullum raised New Zealand hopes of chasing down their target of 302 when they put on 69 for the 8th wicket, before the home side eventually won by 32 runs.

McCullum batted virtually one-handed after being struck on the shoulder keeping wickets, and he'll have the injured scanned today.

Australia's innings featured a man of the match century by opening bat Brad Haddin, while Elliott completed a great double for the Black Caps with 115 in their total of 269.

New Zealand lead the series 2-1 with game four coming up tomorrow in Adelaide, and Daniel Vettori is optimistic McCullum wil be able to play.
