Punjab tournament invaluable for Black Sticks

7:24 am on 10 February 2009

The New Zealand men's hockey coach Shane McLeod says the Punjab Gold Cup in India has been invalauble for the teams development.

Rebuilding after the Olympics, the Black Sticks beat Germany 3-2 in the bronze medal match in Chandigarh with squad newcomer Joel Baker scoring the winning goal in the last minute.

McLeod says a tournament of this nature with 20 thousand fans watching, has been an opportunity they seldom get.... an opportunity to experiment without having to worry too much about results.

The Black Sticks now return home for a series against India later this month.
