6:35 am on 12 February 2009

The Wellington Phoenix midfielder Richard Johnson will retire from all football at the conclusion of his contract with the A-League club in June .

Johnson says he's had trouble with a knee all season and has been told to stop playing if he wants any sort of life after football.

The 34-year-old's 18-year professional career saw him play with Watford in the English Premier League and for Australia on three times.

Johnson played 21 games for the Phoenix in two seasons and coach Ricki Herbert says he'll be

sorely missed.
