Canes too sloppy as Tahs prove calibre

The Hurricanes have lost to the Waratahs 26-22 in their opening Super 14 rugby game in Wellington.

A stirring defensive display and some deadly finishing from their outside backs earned the Waratahs just their second win in eight games over the Hurricanes in New Zealand.

The home team dominated territorially for much of the contest, but were frequently foiled by the blue defensive line.

Conversely, the New South Wales side made the most of their rare incursions into opposition territory, scoring three first half tries to lead 19-5 at the break.

The Hurricanes reduced the deficit to four with 13 minutes remaining but the Waratahs' line held.
