The Phoenix striker Leo Bertos has capped a strong season in Australian football's A-League by being named the club's Player of the Year in Wellington while Shane Smeltz won the Golden Boot.

Smeltz, who's moving to Gold Coast United next season, was also voted players' Player of the Year after winning League awards as the best player and top scorer with 12 goals from 20 games.

Bertos returned from Perth to join the Phoenix for their second season, playing 16 games and scoring two goals.

The club's football staff say his pace and ability to create attacking opportunities set him apart.

They used a 3-2-1 voting system for each game and Bertos received 23, eight more than the defensive midfielder Jon McKain.

Skipper Andrew Durante, defender Ben Sigmund and goalkeeper Glen Moss earned 13 to share third.
