Palu off, So'oialo still to face the judiciary

3:27 pm on 15 February 2009

The Waratahs rugby player Wycliff Palu has been cleared by the SANZAR judiciary on charges of stamping or trampling on the Hurricanes player Jeremy Thrush in the Waratahs' 26-22 victory in Wellington.

Palu appeared before SANZAR judicial officer Bruce Squire QC at the NZRU offices in Wellington where Squire viewed video footage of the incident and heard evidence from Palu.

Squire says it's clear from viewing TV camera angles that were not available to the citing commissioner or broadcast TV that in fact Palu had stepped over Thrush.

He said any contact had been accidental and occurred as Thrush attempted to get to his feet as Palu stepped over him.

As a result, the citing was not upheld.

The Hurricanes' Rodney So'oialo faces the judiciary tomorrow afternoon over the same charge against Phil Waugh.

The hearing is due to start at four o'clock.
