The Williams Formula One team has suffered a huge financial blow with one of its biggest backers pulling out of a deal worth about $28 million.

The BBC says the ailing Royal Bank of Scotland will end its agreement as a direct result of the economic downturn.

The bank is on Friday expected to report a loss of up to 28 billion pounds, a record in British corporate history.

Williams isn't the only casualty as the bank's also reviewing its sponsorship deals with individuals such as tennis star Andy Murray.

The team principal Sir Frank Williams says they'll battle on and remain in a strong position to to ride out the inevitable challenges of the next two years.
