The South African cricket team is in strong position to chase down a record target of 454 to win the first Test against Australia in Johannesburg.

The Proteas reached 178 for 2 at stumps on day four with Neil McKenzie and captain Graeme Smith putting on 76 for the first wicket.

Jacques Kallis and Hashim Amla will return to the crease on the last day with the home side needing 276 runs from 98 overs to win.

The West Indies set the world record for a highest successful fourth-innings run-chase with 418 for seven against Australia in Antigua in May 2003.
