Powell wins 100 in Melbourne

Jamaica's former world record holder Asafa Powell defied a strong headwind to easily win his first 100 metres race of the year at a World Athletics Tour meeting in Melbourne.

Powell cruised to victory in 10.23 seconds, while the young Canterbury sprinter David Ambler was third in a time of 10.52 seconds.

Valerie Vili won the women's shot put with a distance of 19.36 metres, while Stuart Farquhar won the men's javelin with a distance of 79.17 metres.

Monique Williams was second in the women's 400 and Nikki Hamblin third in the women's 1500.
