NZ womens cricketers beat Australia

5:50 am on 9 March 2009

The New Zealand women's cricketers have beaten defending champions Australia by 13 runs in a rain-affected game on the day of the ICC World Cup in Sydney.

New Zealand were bowled out for 205 in 48 overs with skipper Haidee Tiffen making 57.

Australia were 132 for 6 off 33 overs when the rain started to fall and they didn't return.... under the Duckworth/Lewis system victory was given to the White Ferns.

Kate Pulford took 3 for 32 off 7 overs and Sophie Devine 2 for 19 off 7.

White Fern coach , Gary Stead says it's a very important match to win and he's absolutely thrilled to get the two points but says there are three areas his side must tidy up before their remaining world cup matches.

He says the lower order batting is very disapointing after they had an excellent platform set for them by the top five.

The White Ferns next match is against the West Indies tomorrow, the Windies beat South Africa by 2 wickets in their opening game.
