The Breakers shooting guard Kirk Penney has become the first New Zealander to win the Australian Basketball League's Most Valuable Player trophy.

Penney, who had brief stints in the NBA with Miami and the Los Angeles Clippers, was a key factor in the New Zealand club's best ever season, guiding them to a third place finish on the ladder and their first appearance in the NBL semi-finals.

Although delighted with the award, Penney says they're still disappointed the Breakers' season had ended with the 2-nil loss to Melbourne in the semis as they should have played better and feels they had a chance of winning the series.
