Brent Arnel gets called up to Test squad

6:48 am on 14 March 2009

The Northern Districts medium fast bowler Brent Arnel is the newcomer to the New Zealand cricket squad for the first Test in the three-match series against India.

And Wellington's James Franklin comes in as an all-rounder for Jacob Oram.

The selection panel head Glenn Turner says Arnelm has been been New Zealand A's best bowler in the four day series against the England Lions.

Turner says Oram hasn't been considered for the first test as he's not fully confident his body's ready for a five-day game.

The Auckland batsman Martin Guptill earns his first Test call-up after a string of solid scores in the Black Caps' limited overs matches.

The squad of 12 for the fifth one dayer in Auckland on Saturday is unchanged with Ian Butler still out injured, although Scott Styris has been called in as cover for Ewen Thompson, who received a blow to his left thumb during training on Friday.

The Test squad is: Daniel Vettori (captain), Brent Arnel, Daniel Flynn, James Franklin, Martin Guptill, Tim McIntosh, Brendon McCullum, Chris Martin, Kyle Mills, Iain O'Brien, Jeetan Patel, Jesse Ryder, Ross Taylor.
