The Venezuelan baseball team has avenged a crushing loss to the United States with a gritty 5-3 win in Toronto, to end the first round of the World Baseball Classic top of Pool C.

Venezuela were thrashed 15-6 just five days ago by the US but turned the tables yesterday.

The U.S. pitchers gave up 12 hits in the loss, which was their first in the 16-nation tournament.

In other action, Mexico has crushed Australia 16-1 to secure a spot in the second round.

The game was called after the sixth inning under the tournament's mercy rule, eliminating underdogs Australians, who had stunned Mexico 17-7 five days ago.
