Federer, Murray safely through at Indian Wells

Roger Federer has felled big-serving Croat Ivo Karlovic 7-6 6-3 to reach the fourth round of the ATP tournament at Indian Wells in California.

The Swiss world number two is aiming to win the title for the fourth time,

He snatched the first set on a tiebreak and broke once in the second to clinch the win and a match against the 17th seed Fernando Gonzalez of Chile for a place in the quarter-finals.

The fourth seed Andy Murray and number 10 Fernando Verdasco strolled into the last 16, with Murray

easily defeating the Frenchman Paul-Henri Mathieu.

But there was a shock defeat for eighth seed Gilles Simon of France at the hands of by another Croatian, Ivan Ljubicic.
