Big day ahead for Black Caps

6:27 am on 19 March 2009

The New Zealand cricketers have a big day ahead of them in the field if they're to remain in contention in the first test against India in Hamilton.

Captain Daniel Vettori and Jesse Ryder both struck centuries to lead a Black Caps fight back on the first day, coming together at 61 for 5, before they were finally dimissed for 279... India ended the day on 29 without loss.

Vettori wasn't too concerned with their first day effort saying there was just enough in the wicket to suggest it was difficult and they swung the ball as well.

He says if you look through the dismissals there weren't too many they'd be disappointed with... a couple of things didn't quite go their way.

Ryder needed number 11 Chris Martin to get through 5 deliveries before he brought up his century and says he was sweating bullets there for a while.

Vettori says his bowlers need a good couple of sessions today.
