Claims of sexisim by Swedish swimmer

8:33 am on 19 March 2009

The Swedish swimmer Therese Alshammar has accused the authorities of being almost sexist, after she was denied a world record at the Australian Championships in Australia.

Alshammar set a new best time in the 50 metres butterfly, but was disqualified from the race for wearing 2 swim suits, which the world governing body FINA says helps with buoyancy.

But the suits can become transparent and Alshammar says she was wearing 2, simply to protect her modesty.

Rules allow for female swimmers to wear bikini bottoms under their swim suits but nothing to cover their upper body... and Alshammar thinks that's unfair....
