A five-wicket bag for the unwanted Black Caps off spinner Jeetan Patel and a century to the young North Districts batsman Kane Williamson have been the highlights at the start of the seventh round in cricket's State Championship.

Patel took five for 65 in 33 overs after Wellington won the toss at the Basin Reserve.

Otago started well with Aaron Redmond making 76 and Craig Cumming 45 but couldn't build on a 121-run opening partnership and was dismissed for 270.

Wellington will resume on seven without loss.

Northern Districts made 306 after being sent in at Eden Park with Williamson making 111.

Auckland's 12 without loss.
