Vera Zvonareva has captured the biggest title of her tennis career, downing the former world number one Ana Ivanovic 7-6 6-2 to win the Indian Wells WTA title in California.

The Russian fourth seed denied fifth-seeded ISerb a second straight title in the $8 million tournament, one of the elite premier mandatory events on the women's tour.

The 24-year-old kept her cool in gusting winds that contributed to 46 unforced errors from Ivanovic.

It's the ninth career title for Zvonareva, the Olympic bronze medallist in Beijing last August.

She's projected to pass American Venus Williams for the number five spot when the WTA rankings are released overnight, moving up from her current sixth.
