South Africa has been chosen to host the second edition of cricket's Indian Premier League, the Twenty20 competition which will be played abroad this year because of a clash with India's general elections next month.

The IPL chairmjan Lalit Modi said South Africa was chosen ahead of England for it's support of the Twenty20 game, it's successful hosting of the inaugural world Twenty20 tournament, and not least because of England's inclement weather.

The time for zone for television is also thought to have been a major factor.

Because of the change of venue, the tournament has been delayed for a week until the 18th of April.

South Africa also have general elections scheduled during the tournament - on the 22nd of April.
