The New Zealand rugby sevens team has kicked off the defence of their Hong Kong title, thrashing Sri Lanka 59 - 0, running in nine tries.

Before the opening day's win, coach Gordon Tiejtens said they have to put behind them the disappointment of being knocked out of the quarter finals for the recent World Cup and kick on in Hong Kong.

New Zealand have yet to win a title on the series circuit this season, but are confident they can do it in Hong Kong and defend their IRB title at the same time.

New Zealand are third behind England and South Africa, but Tiejtens said with 30 points up for grabs this weekend, they're still in the running.

New Zealand is pooled with Australia, World Cup Bowl winners Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka
