Brian O'Driscoll has been voted the top player of the 2009 Six Nations rugby competition after leading Ireland to their first Grand Slam for 61 years.

The centre scored tries in four of Ireland's five victories during their historic championship campaign.

O'Driscoll won a fans' online poll ahead of runner-up, Italy back-row Sergio Parisse, and Ireland lock Paul O'Connell who came third.

The fans voted on a shortlist of players chosen by former internationals Jason Leonard (England), Keith Wood (Ireland), David Sole (Scotland), Ieuan Evans (Wales), Philippe St Andre (France) and Alessandro Moscardi (Italy).

Also nominated were English and Welsh full-backs Delon Armitage and Lee Byrne, and Ireland back-row Jamie Heaslip.
