Spinner Jeetan Patel looms as the likely casualty with the return of pace bowler Tim Southee to the New Zealand cricket squad for the third test against India starting in Wellington on Friday.

The head of the selection panel Glenn Turner says Southee has been brought back after strong performances for Northern Districts in the domestic competition including a five wicket bag against Canterbury.

He says Southee's inclusion gives additional new ball options and strengthens the attack against the strong Indian batting lineup.

Daniel Flynn who missed the drawn test in Napier is expected to play, as he's recovering well from a hand injury but will undergo a fitness test later in the week.

In the meantime Jamie How will remain with the squad as cover.

Allrounder Jacob Oram wasn't considered as he's still recovering from an injury.
