The world tennis number one Rafael Nadal held off a strong challenge from Portugal's Frederico Gil to book a place in the fourth round of the WTA tournament in Miami.
The strong-serving Spaniard broke service twice in the first set to take it 7-5.
The aggressive Gil broke broke early to go 2-0 up in the second but Nadal took control to win 6-3.
He'll face either Russia's Igor Andreev or Switzerland's Stanislas Wawrinka.
Others to progress include the sixth-seeded Argentine Juan Martin del Potro, who won in Auckland in January.
