Call for Socceroos to get more credit for their success

The Australia football coach Pim Verbeek says his side should be given more credit for their achievements in their Fifa World Cup qualifying campaign.

Australia are on the brink of securing their place in South Africa next year after beating Uzbekistan 2-0 in Sydney.

They would have been the first nation to qualify for the finals if Bahrain and Qatar had drawn in the other Asian group match, but Bahrain won 1-0.

Yet to concede a single goal after five matches in the fourth round of Asian qualifiers, Australia need to collect just one more point from their remaining three matches in June to secure their place at the finals.

Some of the Socceroos' recent performances have been criticised for lacking attacking flair, but Verbeek says people should appreciate how well they have played.

Australia's next match is against Qatar on June 6th.

South Korea snatched the lead in the other Asian qualifying group off their bitter rivals North Korea, scoring the only goal three minutes from the end.
