An eight-year, $31.65 million contract with the University of Kentucky has made John Calipari the highest paid collegiate basketball head coach in the United States.

Calipari signed after nine seasons at Memphis, which he took to the brink of an NCAA championship.

He replaces Billy Gillispie, who was fired two seasons into a seven-year deal.

The 50-year-old has an overall record of 445-140 during 17 seasons as head coach at Massachusetts and Memphis, and is hoping to join Rick Pitino as the only coaches to take three different programmes to the Final Four.
