The former striker Alan Shearer will take over as manager of the Premier League football club Newcastle United for the final eight games of the season.
Shearer, the club's record goalscorer with 206 goals in 404 appearances, takes over from Joe Kinnear immediately, with the task of ensuring their top flight survival.
Shearer says he hasn't looked beyond the end of the season.
He says Kinnear is in the job at the moment and is recovering well from his operation and the club wishes him well.
Newcastle are third from bottom of the Premier League, having won just once in 12 league games, and face Chelsea at home on Sunday (NZT).
