The Crusaders remain in the hunt to defend their Super 14 rugby title after beating South Africa's Bulls 16 - 13 in Christchurch.

The Crusaders scored just one try to the Bulls' two but the champions' first five Stephen Brett kicked his team to their third victory in as many weeks with two penalties, a conversion and a drop goal.

The winger Akona Ndungane scored two tries for the Bulls, who were unbeaten this season until losing to the Highlanders last weekend, while the Crusaders lock Isaac Ross scored their only try early in the first half.

In Perth the Western Force also kept their finals hopes alive and effectively ended Queensland's, winning 39 - 7.
