Bad start for New Zealand batsmen

12:12 pm on 4 April 2009

The New Zealand cricketers have lost two early wickets and are 35 for two after just over an hour of day two of the third and deciding Test in Wellington.

Martin Guptill was bowled by Zaheer Khan for 17 then Daniel Flynn was caught behind, also off Khan for two.

Fellow opener Tim McIntosh is on 12 and Ross Taylor four.

India resumed on 375 for 9 and added just four runs in two overs before tailender Ishant Sharma nicked one behind off Chris Martin, wicketkeeper Brendon McCullum easily taking the catch.

So the match has swung India's way, and the Black Caps will be brooding over missing the chance to gain the upper hand on the opening day.

New Zealand's captain Dan Vettori won the toss and opted to bowl and his gamble looked to have paid off with India slumping to 204 for six after lunch.

But their captain MS Dhoni and the spin bowler Harbhajan Singh added 79 runs for the seventh wicket before Dhoni was out for 52 and Harbhajan for 60.

Zaheer Khan then contributed a quick 33 and the other pace bowlers Ishant Sharma and Munaf Patel are still there on 15 and 14.

Chris Martin's taken three wickets and Tim Southee and Iain O'Brien two each, but they were all expensive.

It's a match the home side must win if they're to level the series.

Allrounder James Franklin says the plan is simple - bat for as long as they can.
