The young Canterbury cyclist Michael Vink used his track speed to win the 101 kilometre Graperide near Blenheim in the penultimate round of the National Points Series.

The under-19 pursuit champion and national junior track team member out-sprinted a select breakaway group that included a national road champion, Gordon McCauley.

Hawkes Bay's Jeremy Yates finished eighth but retains his healthy series lead over McCauley going into the final round at Lake Brunner near Greymouth on April 18.

Nelson's Karen Fulton won the women's race from Hawkes Bay's Serena Sheridan, who has an unassailable lead in the series.
