Wins to Steel and Vixens in first round of trans-Tasman netball

6:49 pm on 4 April 2009

The Southern Steel and the Melbourne Vixens have started the trans-Tasman netball competition with wins.

The Steel beat the Central Pulse 55-46 in Invercargill and the Vixens beat the West Coast Fever 57-44 in Melbourne.

The Wellington-based Pulse have one of the competition's least experienced squads and didn't win last season but stayed in the game until the last quarter.

They were always going to struggle at Stadium Southland, however, with the hosts's squad full of current or former Silver Ferns.

The Steel shooters, Daneka Wipiiti and Donna Wilkens, had 88 and 75 per cent success rates compared with 80 and 77 per cent for Jamilah Gupwell and Paula Griffin for the Pulse.
