Black Sticks control game against Pakistan

12:21 pm on 7 April 2009

The New Zealand men's hockey team put in an impressive second half performance to open the Sultan Azlan Shah tournament in Malaysia with a 3-2 win over Pakistan.

Playing in just his sixth international the North Harbour striker Priyesh Bhana opened the scoring after five minutes, but the Black Sticks trailed 2-1 at the break.

However a Nick Haig goal and a penalty stroke from Dean Couzins just two minutes from time gave them the victory.

Manager John Christensen says the New Zealanders controlled the game in the second half and the Pakistanis were unable to mount any real scoring opportunities.

New Zealand play Egypt tomorrow. Egypt was beaten 4-1 by Malaysia last night.
