The Brazil football player Adriano reportedly spent three days with childhood friends in a Rio de Janeiro slum after failing to return to his Italian club Inter Milan.
Police inspector Marcus Reimao says Adriano was apparently depressed because his girlfriend broke up with him, and the striker went to the slum to stay with friends until Sunday.
Adriano then left the slum to stay with his relatives in Rio.
He was supposed to return to Italy after Brazil's World Cup qualifier against Peru on Thursday.
The police officer denied the striker was kidnapped, as reported by some local media.
His agent, Gilmar Rinaldi, says it's not clear when Adriano will return to Italy.
