Swim coach says enough is enough

The coach of Queensland butterfly swimmer Nick D'Arcy says he wants to know how long Australian swimming authorities plan to punish the 21-year-old.

D'Arcy was given a 14-month suspended jail sentence last month after he was convicted of assaulting former Commonwealth Games champion Simon Cowley.

His attack left Cowley with a fractured nose, eye socket, jaw and cheekbone, and metal plates in his jaw and skull. He later apologised for the attack and pleaded guilty in court.

D'Arcy was chosen for this year's World Championships in Rome after he broke the Australian record and beat his nearest rival in the trials by more than two seconds.

But Swimming Australia has dropped him from the team because he has breached swimming by-laws with his assault conviction.

D'Arcy's coach Brian Stehr says he is stunned and angry and asks how long do you continue punish somebody for the same thing?" he said.

Swimming Australia released a statement this afternoon, saying D'Arcy failed to meet the requirements of a code of behaviour he had signed up to in March.

One of the by-laws allows the governing body to terminate a swimmer's place on the team if he or she is found guilty of a criminal offence.
