Federer to play in Monte Carlo afterall

6:44 am on 11 April 2009

Roger Federer has reversed his initial decision and will now take part in the opening claycourt tennis tournament of the season, the Monte Carlo Masters.

The Swiss world number two originally planned to play less in claycourt competition this year and he'd only signed up for Rome and Madrid as preparation for the French Open.

Organisers of the Monte Carlo Masters had kept Federer a wildcard in the hope he changed his mind.

Federer's endured a disappointing start to the season in his own high standards, failing to win a tournament and losing more ground on arch-rival and world number one Rafael Nadal of Spain.
